Holiday Safety

A few common misconceptions about natural Christmas trees and poinsettias have caused some consumers to question the safety of these two Christmas favorites. Take a moment and let us dispel these myths!

MYTH: Poinsettias are Poisonous
Contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are not poisonous. The misconception is based on an unfounded story from 1919 and has continued to perpetuate incorrect information for nearly a century. Numerous studies have been conducted and all have concluded that poinsettias are not poisonous. Like many other household plants, they can have ill affects if ingested. A study from Ohio State University showed that a fifty pound child who ate 500 bracts (leaves) might suffer a slight stomach ache (who wouldn't?). Because the sap can irritate skin and eyes and ingestion of poinsettia leaves, like any house plant, can cause stomach aches and illness; it is always a good idea to keep them out of reach of pets and children.

MYTH: Real Christmas Trees are a Fire Hazard
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) which tracks fires and their causes, approximately one tenth of one percent (0.1%) of residential fires involves a Christmas Tree — both real and artificial.

Trees that are kept fresh during the holiday season using common sense care tips are extremely difficult to ignite. This fact was put to the test by the Farmington Hills Fire Department, Farmington Hills, Michigan.

Keeping your fresh tree watered it the key. Keep that in mind if you see a sensational blazing tree on the "Action News." These trees are often doused in a flammable liquid or cut many months prior to harvest time and allowed to dry. In 2004 Jay Leno shared a humorous "behind the scenes" clip of a fire fighter trying to ignite a real Christmas tree.
