Poinsettia Plant Selection and Care

Selection:

Choose a plant with dark green foliage down to the soil line.

Choose bracts (the red leaves) that are completely colored.

Do not choose plants with a large number of fallen or yellowed leaves.

The poinsettia should look full, balanced and attractive from all sides.

Choose plants that are not drooping or wilting.

Look for the Make it a Real Michigan Christmas tag, or ask if it's a Michigan poinsettia.

Care:

Be sure to remove foil covering drain holes before watering.

Water only when soil is dry.

Do not let the poinsettia wilt.

Do not let it sit with water in the saucer. Empty the saucer.

Place the poinsettia in indirect light. Six hours of light daily is ideal. Be careful to not let any part of plant touch cold window panes.

Ideal indoor temperatures range from 60° to 70°F, try to keep poinsettias away from warm or cold drafts from radiators, air registers or open doors and windows.

Placing your poinsettia in a cool room 55° to 60°F at night will extend blooming time. Do not fertilize when plant is in bloom.
